Berend C. Stoel is assistant professor at the Division of Image Processing, Department of Radiology at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), Leiden, the Netherlands (www.lkeb.nl). This group of 40 people performs research, implementation and validation of image processing techniques, with a goal of producing objective and reproducible assessments of medical images.

Dr. Stoel is heading the Section of 'Orthopedics & Pulmonology', which aims at applications mainly in these fields, but also at exploring applications in other medical specialties. He graduated in medical informatics from Leiden University in 1989, and received his PhD in 1996 on objective assessment of X-ray image quality, at LUMC.

In Pulmonology, his main interests are in quantifying pulmonary emphysema through CT densitometry. His analysis software is being used in several drug evaluation trials.
